March 20, 2004
COLLEGE STATION, Texas
Sophomore Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio) wound up in 13th place in the 200m backstroke to gain Tennessee four points with a 2:10.79 clocking in the NCAA Championship at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Auburn's Kirsty Coventry claimed the crown with an NCAA meet record 2:03.86. Tennessee finished in 28th place with 23 points, while Auburn ascended to the three-time defending national champion echelon with its third consecutive title.
"This has been a pivotal year for our program," Head Coach Dan Colella said. "We were able to qualify some relay teams here at NCAAs. We have a solid group of returning student-athletes and we have some exciting newcomers next season. As for this meet, we had several lifetime bests. I am proud of both of our freshmen, Tiffany Clay and Megan Tomes. Our team will return more hungry next year.
Additionally, Jacque Fessel finished in 17th place, just out of finals, twice yesterday and I think that carried over yesterday evening. I am proud that she was able to come back tonight and swim a smarter race. It was a nice way to finish the meet for us.
The 2003-04 Tennessee Lady Volunteer season is now over. Overall, the Big
Orange was 4-2 in the dual meet season with a 2-2 record against Southeastern
Conference programs. Additionally, Tennessee nabbed four All-America
certificates with Fessel earning a pair in the 100m back and 200m back, while
junior Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) claimed two herself with a sixth-place
effort in the three-meter springboard and a 12th-place performance in the
