KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 11 Tennessee men's swimming team picked up a big SEC win over LSU 127-105 while fighting to the end in a loss to ACC-power Virginia 135-103 Saturday at the UT Student Aquatic Center.

"Despite a fast start in the 200 I.M., we were unable to waver Virginia," UT head coach John Trembley said. "LSU showed great spirit and they are a young team that will get better quickly."

Sophomore Jevon Tarantino returned to the pool Saturday in his first action in over a month with two wins on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. On the 1-meter board, Tarantino (345.10) defeated Niko Dalman (287.75) of LSU who finished second while fellow Vol Ryan Rincon (262.45) finished fourth. On 3-meter, Tarantino (370.50) again topped Dalman (276.55), who finished second while Rincon (269.50) finished third. Both scores were season highs for Tarantino.

"I'm really pleased to have Jevon back on the boards," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He scored season highs on both boards."

"Jevon Tarantino's return was outstanding today. He dove extremely well under less than ideal physical conditions," Trembley added.

Junior Bryan Goldberg won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.50. Fran Crippen of Virginia finished second in 1:40.09, edging Vol Jason Thomas who finished third in 1:40.52.

"Bryan Goldberg raced hard in his win in the 200 free," Trembley said.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Josh Fulton, Kiel Huston, Andrew Engle and Tyler Gustafson won in 1:30.78 with Gustafson anchoring the team.

Gustafson finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 45.29. Michael Raab of Virginia won in 44.68. Goldberg finished fourth in 46.28 with freshman Octavio Alesi following in fifth in 46.61.

Freshman Michael Wolfe finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:49.28. Cavalier Bo Greenwood finished first in 1:48.87.

The Vols return to action next Saturday against SEC rival Georgia at the UT Student Aquatic Center at 11 a.m.
