In its first season as a combined program, Tennessee swimming and diving program had seven seniors who led the way into a new era.
The class is an interesting mix. Three men. Four women. Four swimmers. Three divers (of the six total on the roster). Two fifth-years. One transfer. Multiple-time All-Americans and SEC Champions.
The team will honor this class at noon Saturday before its major SEC meet against Georgia at noon. Here's a brief look at the class:
Career: Floyd had put together already an impressive career with the championship season still ahead. An 18-time All-American (10 first team honors) and 11 career SEC medals, including three golds last year. A school-record holder in the 200 butterfly and every relay. Also an Academic All-American and a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll student.
Signal Mountain, Tenn.
Career: Mauney has consistently improved every season with the Vols' diving program. He has set career bests in every event this year and has NCAA zone qualifying scores in all of them. He has the ninth-best platform score in program history (333.85). Also a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient.
Career: Another diver, McGroarty is in her fifth year at UT. She's already wrapped up her undergraduate degree in communications and is now in graduate school. A two-time All-American and bronze medal recipient on the 3-meter springboard. She has put together a strong senior year, earning SEC Diver of the Week this month.
Career: Simmons has only been at UT two years since transferring from Buffalo, but she has put together honors already that most don't earn in a whole career. A strong addition to UT's sprints and relays, she is a five-time All-American at UT who is part of three school record relay teams. Won three medals at the 2012 SEC Championships.
Career: A senior fifth-year diver, Sterling has saved his best performances for last, becoming one of the SEC's most consistent 3-meter springboard divers as a senior. Has qualified for the NCAA final site diving competition twice and has the seventh-best 1-meter score in program history (347.40). Earned the 2012 NCAA Elite 89 Award for his academics.
Career: Served as captain on the men's team the last two years and has been an invaluable leader for the Vols. A five-time All-American whose sprint freestyle abilities have been an asset to UT his whole career. Earned two medals at SEC meets as part of the 200 freestyle and medley teams. A member of the 2011 SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Career: A senior from Tennessee, Watson has added to the Lady Vols' lineup in the butterfly and freestyle races. She has the second-fastest 200 fly time in Tennessee history (1:56.01) and also has the sixth-fastest time int he 100 fly (53.78). She is a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
