Tennessee diver Michael Wright placed third in the qualifying round of the three-meter springboard at the USA Diving Winter Nationals, making him eligible for the championships in that event.
Wright qualified behind a 371.15 mark Tuesday at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
"I missed one dive and that was the down point of the meet for me," Wright said. "Every other dive I averaged around 65 points so other than that one dive I feel good about it."
After transferring to The Hill in 2008 from Indian River Community College, the former junior college national champion chose to redshirt during the 2009-10 season to fully recover from a back injury. This event is Wright's lone opportunity for competitive action this season.
"It's different to watch from the sidelines," Wright said. "It feels great to be out here and actually compete. This is the only meet I can compete in this year so it was exciting knowing I only had this one chance to make the finals."
While Wright qualified for the three-meter with his performance in the preliminary round, he is prequalified for the one-meter event through his score at the AT&T USA Diving National Championships in August 2009.
Sophomore standout Ryan Helms is also prequalified for both the one- and three-meter events. Additionally, Helms will compete in the synchronized diving events with partner Aaron Fleshner of Alabama.
Competition will resume Thursday and continue through Monday Feb. 8. Schedules and results are available at USAdiving.org. Live results as well as a live video feed can be found at DiveMeets.com.
