FT. MYERS, Fla. -- Freshmen David Heron and Evan Pinion returned to swimming competition over the weekend in the Crippen Cup 10K at the Open Water Swimming Festival.
Heron placed ninth overall in a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes, 41.50 seconds. Pinion was 23rd in 2:05:39.48.
Alex Meyer, a 2012 Olympian, won the race in 1:52.47.39.
The Crippen Cup signaled a comeback for the two distance swimmers. Heron was the Vols' leading distance freestyler, earning SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Week honors during the early dual meets. He was injured midway through the season and missed the postseason. Pinion missed the entire season recovering from surgery.
Before arriving at Tennessee, both Heron and Pinion were members of the USA Swimming Junior National Team. Heron represented USA at the FINA Junior World Championships in August, placing sixth in the 1500-meter freestyle. Pinion, a Knoxville native, won the 800 and 1500 at the 2011 FINA Junior World Championships.
