SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Tennessee junior Liam Stone qualified for his second FINA Grand Prix diving final with his strong performance in windy conditions Thursday.
Stone took silver on the 3-meter springboard at the FINA Grand Prix stop last month in Gatineau, Canada, and looks to medal again on the international stage.
The reigning SEC Diver of the Year was fourth on 3-meter after morning preliminaries with a score of 392.95. He was third in his semifinal group with a score of 367.75 to advance to the final.
“After a solid prelim performance in somewhat windy conditions, Liam placed fourth on the prelim, which I was pleased with,” Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. “The afternoon session provided blustery winds, which was very trying for all the divers but despite being off his game a tad, he managed to hit a few key dives and has moved on through to Saturday's final where he will have the opportunity to go for another international medal and raise his world ranking.”
