ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Divers Sarah Chewning and Michael Howell are competing this weekend at the USA Diving National Preliminary Zone A Championships.
The meet runs today through Sunday at the Montgomery Aquatic Center.
Chewning and Howell are both entered in the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. The women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter springboard events will be held Friday.
A top-five result means a chance to compete on the home boards.
Those who place in the top five at the zone meet qualify for the USA Diving's AT&T National Diving Championships, which will be held in Knoxville at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center from Aug. 12-17.
Chewning is competing as a member of Tennessee Diving for the first time. The Springdale, Ark., native transferred to Tennessee for the 2013-14 season after spending the first two years of her career diving at Kentucky. After sitting out for a year, she is entering her first season competing for the Orange and White.
Howell completed his freshman season at Tennessee in the spring. The rising sophomore posted zone qualifying scores on the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events during his first year. He finished 17th in the SEC Championships on platform.
