Feb. 6, 2009Nick Panezich posted a throw of 18.63m (61-01.50) to win the championship section of the shot put while Michael Spooner posted a time of 8:14.11 to win the collegiate section of the 3,000m.
Panezich's mark improved on his existing NCAA provisional qualifier by more than 31 inches and moved him into eighth place on UT's all-time top-10 list in the shot put. The throw also ranks fifth in the NCAA this season using marks established prior to Feb. 6-7 competitions.
Spooner shaved more than 10 seconds off his previous top time in the 3,000m to claim victory in a field of 56 competitors.
"We got off to a good start, especially with Nick and Michael," Tennessee head coach Bill Webb said. "Both of them not only won and improved their lifetime-bests, but did it in impressive fashion. As a team, we were competitive in every event, which should give us some momentum heading into Saturday."
Among the nine other Vols in individual competition Friday were sprinters Evander Wells, Kyle Stevenson and Joseph Morris. Wells improved his NCAA provisional mark in the 60m with the fourth-fastest preliminary time at 6.68 before going on to post a 6.73 clocking and finish eighth in the championship race. Morris qualified for the consolation final with a prelim time of 6.75 then finished that race fifth with the same clocking. Stevenson posted a time of 6.82 in the prelims to place 18th overall, but he did not qualify for either of the final races.
Hurdler Charlton Rolle posted the third-fastest qualifying time in the 60m hurdle prelims at 7.88 then went on to finish sixth at 7.89 in the championship final. In the 400m championship, Samdi Fraser was the top UT finisher in 15th at 48.11. John Hewitt placed 26th in 48.49, while Alan Bachman posted the 64th-fastest time at 49.59.
In field event action, Brenard Wilson placed 10th in the collegiate section of the long jump with a final distance of 6.98m (22-11.00). Richard Wooten finished 10 spots behind Panezich in the championship shot put with a throw of 16.66m (54-8).
Tennessee's distance medley relay also competed for the second time this season, finishing 11th in the championship section at 9:57.23.
The Vols are tied for sixth as a team with 14 points after day one of their only scored meet of the regular season.
Seventeen individual athletes and the 4x400 relay unit are entered to compete Saturday. Competition for the first UT athlete begins at 9:20 a.m. ET. Live video and live results are available at www.armorytrack.com.
