FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - For the first time this season, Tennessee track and field competed in multiple meets in the same day. Tennessee track athletes opened Friday by taking part in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Field competitors for the Big Orange were in Birmingham for Southern Miss's Cupid Classic, while distance runners Chelsea Blaase and Austin Whitelaw represented UT at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington.

Blaase scored a personal best of 16 minutes 3.12 second to place eighth in the 5000m Invite in Seattle. Whitelaw won his his section of the 5000m to finish 18th overall in the event.

In Fayetteville, Alexis Panisse continued her winning ways scoring a victory in the 800m. The winning time was 2:06.56, a second straight personal best for Panisse in the event. Brittney Jackson and Amirah Johnson also scored personal bests in the 800m to finish fifth and sixth respectively. The personal bests kept coming as Panisse took second in the mile (4:40.28), while Kelsey Kane was 11th. Felecia Majors bested in the 400m (53.89), along with earning 29th in the long jump. Emily Yarnell rounded out the night of personal bests for the Lady Vols in Fayetteville with a 7.592 in the 60m.

Tennessee men held their own at the Tyson Invitational as well on Friday. Peter Okwera earned fifth in the 5000m in 14:34.96, while Nick Kaiser brought in an 11th place finish in the 800m. The mile was a good event for the Vols placing three in the top 15: Daniel Tobin seventh, Jeremy Dickie ninth, and Kyle Walter 15th. Terrance Livingston was 10th in the 400m, joined by teammate Michael Williams who was 46th. Jamol James earned 11th in the 60m preliminary round and advance to the semi-finals securing ninth in 6.72 seconds. James was just .02 of a second shy of qualifying for the finals of the event.


 

 

Tennessee field athletes returned to a familiar venue, the Birmingham CrossPlex, for Friday's Cupid Classic. Tavis Bailey and Matthew Hoty delivered the one-two punch in men's shot put. Bailey earned first with a personal best of 62 feet 8 inches (19.10 meters), as Hoty was a close second with a high mark of 59-2.25/18.04m. Chase Brannon placed second in pole vault for the Vols with a 17-0.75/5.20m mark; Michael Maira was 11th. Cameron Brown placed second in the weight throw of 69-6.25/21.19m, surpassing the previous facilty and his personal best. Bailey attained a personal best of 64-7.25/19.69 in the event. Rounding out the weight throw for Tennessee was Deon McAdoo 10th and Carson Frost 16th.

For the Lady Vols in Birmingham, Aslynn Halvorson won the women's shot put while placing 12th in the weight throw. Her winning mark of 50-8.25/15.45 is a new personal best in the event. Erin Champion and Linda Hadfield earned sixth and seventh respectively in the women's pole vault.

Collectively amongst the three meets, the Big Orange attained three wins, 11 personal bests, and 19 top 10 finishes. Tennessee closes out the weekend with the conclusion of the Tyson Invitational from Fayetteville tomorrow. Action resumes with field events beginning at 12 noon and running events at 1p.m.
