UT Concludes Indoor Season At NCAAs

March 9, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Tennessee track & field team put an end to its 2013 indoor season at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark., as junior Lady Vol pole vaulter Linda Hadfield registered no height on Saturday night at nationals.

Hadfield was coming off a school-record performance of 13-feet, 11-inches (4.24m) at last week's last chance qualifier at Virginia Tech, where she was bumped to 11th in the nation to earn the bid to her first-career NCAA Indoor Championships.

However, competing at the Randal Tyson Track Center for second time in three weeks, Hadfield missed all three of her attempts at the opening height of 13-1.5 (4.00m) and was eliminated from the competition.

Kansas' Natalia Bartnovskaya and Eastern Illinois' Jade Riebold both leaped 14-7.25 (4.45m), but Bartnovskaya won gold with fewer missed heights.

On Friday night, Vol freshman Jake Blankenship posted a fourth-place finish in the men's pole vault, the best Vol finish in the event since Lawrence Johnson won the title in 1996. Blankenship bested his UT freshman record with a vault of 18-4.5 (5.60m), a mark which ties Olympic gold medalist Tim Mack for second on UT's all-time indoor list.

Blankenship earned five points for the Vols, which end up finishing 40th as a team. It's the first time the Lady Vols have not scored at the meet since the 2000 nationals.

After taking a week off to prep for the outdoor season, Tennessee will be back in action for its first outdoor meet of the 2013 campaign from March 22-23, when it travels to Starkville, Miss., for the annual SEC/Big 10 Challenge. Representing the Big 10 will be Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin, while Mississippi State, Ole Miss and the Big Orange will carry the flag of the SEC.
