Runners Advance to Finals as Wertman Wins Shot Put

RALEIGH, N.C. - Tennessee track and field opened the weekend in Raleigh with a win, eight personal bests, and nine top ten finishes Friday at the 2014 Adidas Raleigh Relays.

In women's field competition, Tennessee was represented by Cassie Wertman and Aslynn Halvorson. Wertman placed 11th in the discus, while winning the shot put with a distance of 15.83 meters (51 feet 11.25 inches). She was followed closely by Halvorson in the shot earned third along with 16th in the discus.

Felecia Majors scored her first outdoor mark in the 400m placing third in 54.24 seconds. She was joined in the top ten by Felicia Brown finishing sixth. In 100m preliminaries, Allison Outerbridge also made her event debut while Emily Yarnell advanced to tomorrow's final securing the eighth and final spot in 11.83 seconds. A pair of Lady Vols scored new personal bests in the outdoor 5000m Friday evening. Chelsea Blaase debuted in placing eighth in (16:12.72), while Alexis Panisse improved upon her previous high mark in the event by more than 20 seconds.

The Vol runners were well represented in the distance events on Friday evening. A total of four Volunteers ran in three different sections of the men's 5000m. Peter Okwera scored a top ten in section C by finishing eighth, while Austin Whitelaw garnered a personal best performance 14:45.59 for 21st in section A. Kyle Walter was the high man for UT in section D placing 13th, while Jeremy Dickie earned a personal best with his 25th place finish.

In the preliminary sections of the 100m, Jarael Nelvis finished seventh in 10.645 seconds to advance into finals competition tomorrow. Daniel Tobin bright-spotted the Big Orange in the 1500m by earning 12th in the event.

Action from Raleigh resumes bright and early at 10 a.m. from Paul Derr Track on the campus of North Carolina State University.
