GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The opening day performance included eight personal bests (including two event debuts) and nine top ten finishes Friday at the 75th edition of the Florida Relays for Tennessee track and field.
Aslynn Halvorson scored the Lady Vols' top field finish of the day score fifth in the women's discus with a mark of 158 feet (48.16 meters). The vaulting duo of Linda Hadfield and Erin Champion placed seventh and eight respectively clearing 13-3.5 (4.05m). This was a new outdoor personal best for Champion. Kyle Quinn highlighted field performers for the men throwing 227ft (69.19m) to earn second in the javelin, while Cameron Brown scored a personal best of 193-8 (59.02m) for sixth in the hammer.
Jeremy Dickie was the fastest Vol on track finishing in 3 minutes 53.29 seconds for 13th in the 1500m. The 1500m was also a great event for the women tonight as three Lady Vols finished in the top 15 and four earned new personal bests. Alexis Panisse (5th - 4:22.75), Amirah Johnson (8th - 4:24.95) and Kelsey Kane (13th - 4:26.50) all improved on their outdoor time in the event. Caroline Duer debuted in the event finishing in 4:50.66.
Coming of performances in the 200 and 400m at NCAA Indoor Championships, freshman Felecia Majors scored a pair of personal bests by way of a 23.58 second debut in the 200m and shaving over a second off her previous best in the 400m finishing 10th in 53.12 seconds. Several other Lady Vols in competition tonight came within less than a second of setting new outdoor personal records. If tonight's hard efforts are any indication of things to come, the Lady Vols dedication to their craft will have even more promising outcomes in the near future.
Tennessee returns to action with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the first runner taking to the track around 2:15 at Percy Beard Track here in Gainesville. Following the meet conclusion tomorrow, the Big Orange return home in preparation for hosting the Tennessee Relays, formerly Sea Rays/Dogwood Relays, next weekend in Knoxville.
