Vols Own Vault At Vanderbilt Invite

April 19, 2013

NASHVILLE - Juniors Chase Brannon and Tyler Porter and freshman standout Jake Blankenship dominated the men's pole vault competition on the opening day of the Vanderbilt Invitational, placing first, second and third in the event, respectively.

The only three at the meet to eclipse 5.00-meters (16-4.75), Brannon led the way with a mark of 17-feet, 5-inches (5.31m), while Porter earned the silver after clearing a height of 17-1 (5.21m). Blankenship, last week's winner of the Sea Ray Relays, finished third with a mark of 16-7.25 (5.06m).

With four wins in the indoor season, the Vol vaulters have now won a combined seven meets in 2013.

After winning the 400m Showcase at Tennessee's home Sea Ray Relays last week, Lady Vol freshman Felicia Brown continued to roll, winning the 200m in a wind-legal lifetime best of 23.19 seconds. That mark is good for 12th in the nation and 9th in the Southeastern Conference entering the weekend. Classmate Emily Yarnell placed sixth in the event (24.44).

In the men's 1,500-meter race, junior Alex McCandless notched a personal record of 4:00.62 to place 10th.

Jazmen Townsend also placed 10th in the women's long jump with a mark of 16-5.25 (5.01m).

Earlier in the day, senior Vol thrower Drew Thomas finished 15th in the men's hammer throw at the 55th annual Mt. SAC Relays. Thomas recorded a throw of 183-2 (55.84m). Thomas and the rest of the Vol and Lady Vol throwers also competed in the Soka Peace Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., on Friday.

In the women's discus competition, Lady Vols Aslynn Halvorson, Cassie Wertman and Jessie Harrison all posted top-five finishes with Halvorson claiming the win. Halvorson recorded a mark of 152-6 (46.49m) to pick up the victory, while Wertman placed third (147-1/44.83m). Harrison carded a fifth-place finish (141-8/43.18m). Men's results for the Soka Peace Invitational are not currently available.

The Big Orange throwers are back in action tomorrow out west in the Long Beach State Beach Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays, while the rest of this week's Tennessee competitors will conclude the weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
