Tennessee Moves Forward on Day Two of SEC Outdoors

May 11, 2013

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A trio of Lady Vols sparked Tennessee, advancing to Sunday finals on a cold and damp second day of action at the 2013 SEC Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo.

Senior Nijgia Snapp finished second in her heat of the 800-meter run, automatically qualifying for the finals on Sunday with a time of 2 minutes, 6.98 seconds.

"In the prelims of the race, I talked to my coach about how I didn't really get off the line very fast or with the rest of the group," Snapp said. "But my splits were perfect. We slowed down a lot on the back stretch, but I wasn't too worried about that because they do that in the prelims and then leave it all in the kick for the top couple spots to get in the final. My only goal going in was to make the final."

St. Louis native Kianna Ruff finished right behind Snapp in the heat, also advancing to finals with a 2:07.24 mark.

"The race was kind of cold today, but I got out really fast," Ruff said. "Indoors, I didn't get out fast and I didn't make finals so in my mind, I had it instilled in my brain `I have to get out. I have to run fast.' I know in the finals I'm just going to focus on my finish."

In her first SEC Outdoor Championship meet, freshman Felicia Brown ran the 200m in a time of 23.24 seconds, winning her heat and moving on to Sunday's final.

Bianca Blair completed the 400m hurdles in 1:01.14, finishing 14th overall.

In the women's field events, senior Jessie Harrison finished 15th in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 168-feet, 3-inches (51.28m).

On the men's side, Peter Okwera placed eighth in the 10,000m with a time of 30:26.98. The sophomore's finish added another point to UT's total. Stephen Derlath finished 11th in the event with a 30:56.12 mark.

Michael Williams finished the 400m hurdles in 53.96, placing 14th. Junior Terrance Livingston posted his best time in the 800m this season as he finished in 1:51.93, placing 16th. Antonio Carter placed 20th overall, finishing with a 1:52.64 mark, a personal best for the sophomore.

Tennessee returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET with the men's javelin throw and long jump. Running events are slated to begin at 3:45 p.m. CT/4:45 p.m. ET with the 1,500-meter run preliminaries.
