Brown Shines As UT Adds Three To NCAA Meet

May 24, 2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lady Vol freshman sprinter Felicia Brown highlighted Friday's NCAA East Preliminary Round action, as the Tennessee track & field program produced NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifiers in three events and sent two into tomorrow's National Quarterfinals at Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T State University.

Brown punched the first NCAA ticket of her career by placing second in the No. 2 heat of the women's 400-meter quarterfinals in a lifetime-best 52.33 seconds. The mark, which ranks seventh on UT's all-time performers list, earned the rookie an automatic bid and was good for fourth overall.

The Lithonia, Ga., native later posted a 23.59-second time in the women's 200m race, which advances her to tomorrow's quarterfinals at 7:35 p.m. ET.

Joining Brown and Thursday's five NCAA qualifiers was fellow Lady Vol Nijgia Snapp in the 800m and rookie Kyle Quinn in the men's javelin throw.

Snapp earned the at-large bid to Oregon with an 11th-place finish in 2 minutes, 7.50 seconds in the women's 800m. The senior placed fourth in the opening heat and 11th overall. The top 12 individuals and relay squads from the East and West Preliminary meets earn the bids to NCAAs.

Quinn, who entered the meet with the No. 12 javelin mark in the East Region, came up in the clutch on Friday afternoon. His first throw of 223-feet, 5-inches (68.11m) earned the freshman a spot in the 16-man finals. After dropping out of the top 12 in the early rounds of finals, Quinn posted a lifetime-best in the event with a heave of 231-7 (70.59m) on his sixth and final throw to jump to seventh place and earn his way to the title meet. Quinn's mark ranks seventh on UT's all-time javelin list.

With a third-place finish in the second heat of the women's 100m hurdles, senior Bianca Blair earned her lane in tomorrow's National Quarterfinals. Blair posted an all-conditions personal record of 13.35 seconds (w: 2.5) in the event and will run at 7:05 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The Big Orange has punched eight NCAA meet tickets through two days of competition, with five Vol and three Lady Vol representatives. Saturday action opens at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer throw, where Cameron Brown and Drew Thomas will compete. Track events start at 6 p.m. The Vol 4x100m relay will be on the oval at 6:15 p.m.

Vols Matthew Hoty and Tavis Bailey failed to qualify for nationals in the men's shot put, while Lady Vol pole vaulters Erin Champion and Linda Hadfield also missed the cut in their event. However, Bailey punched his ticket yesterday in the discus competition.
