June 14, 2014

EUGENE, Ore. -- The 2014 track and field season came to a close Saturday evening at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

In her NCAA debut, Cassie Wertman placed 15th in the women's shot put. The sophomore threw a distance of 52 feet 6.75 inches (16.02m) in the championship final. The height is her fourth highest of the outdoor season.

Thanks to bronze medal finishes by Tavis Bailey in the discus and Jake Blankenship in the pole vault, the Tennessee men finished 18th in the team standings with 12 points. Host Oregon won the men's competition with 88.

Sophomore Alexis Panisse put the women on the team scoreboard with an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters. Texas A&M won the women's team championships with 75 points.

Tennessee's championship weekend ends with two bronze medals and five top-ten finishes. The Big Orange managed to achieve two new school records, 28 event victories, 87 athlete personal bests, and 228 top ten finishes.
