Gatlin Qualifies For USA World Team In 100m

June 21, 2013

DES MOINES, Iowa. – With an Olympic gold and bronze medal to his name, former Tennessee standout Justin Gatlin continued his stellar season on Friday, finishing second in the men’s 100-meter dash at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Needing to place in the top three to qualify for the IAAF World Championships, slated for August 10-18 in Moscow, Russia, Gatlin breezed his way to a second place finish in the 100m in 9.89 seconds. Unlike his win over world record holder Usain Bolt this season, Gatlin took the lead out of the blocks, but American record holder Tyson Gay kicked it into gear midway through the race and claimed the win in 9.75, which marked the 10th fastest time ever run in the world.

In the same event outside of the States, Vol sprinter Jamol James was putting on a show in his homeland of Trinidad & Tobago. A member of T&T’s 4x100m Olympic relay pool last summer, James posted his best time of the season in the prelims of the 100m at the Trinidad & Tobago National Open Championships. The sophomore won the sixth heat in 10.24 and finished with the No. 2 overall qualifying time. With slots available for the IAAF World Championships, he will look to advance out of the semifinals on Saturday at 4:40 p.m. ET.

Back on the blue oval, former Lady Vol Ellen Wortham coasted to a third place finish in the opening heat of the 400m hurdle prelims. An 11-time All-American at UT, Wortham advanced to Saturday’s semis with a readout of 57.44 seconds. She will be in heat one tomorrow at 5:03 p.m. ET.

In the women’s 800m semifinals, former Lady Vol Chanelle Price blazed to a time of 2 minutes, 0.88 seconds, a mark good for seventh overall in the round. However, Price finished sixth in a loaded second heat and with only four from each flight moving onto the finals, her weekend came to a close. Phoebe Wright ran in the opening heat of the same event, but pulled up after the first lap and was unable to finish the race.

In the field, Lady Vol signee Felecia Majors posted a 10th place finish in the junior long jump competition. It was Majors second jump that measured 17-feet, 9.75-inches (5.43m). After fouling on his first two attempts, Vol thrower Cameron Brown recorded a toss of 176-4 (53.74m) to finish 17th in the junior hammer throw contest.

Back on the track, freshman Felicia Brown finished 16th in the women’s 400m in 53.44 seconds. She returns to action on Saturday for the prelims of the 200m at 4:35 p.m. ET.

Saturday marks a big day for those with Big Orange ties as seven athletes hit the track. Highlighting the day will be Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Aries Merritt, who makes his first appearance of the USA Outdoor Championships in the 110m hurdles at 4:10 p.m. ET. Olympic medalist Dee Dee Trotter will also be on the Drake Stadium track for the 200m, and Sarah Brown – ran as Sarah Bowman at UT – will look to qualify for the World Championships in the 1,500m at 5:46 p.m. ET.

A live online broadcast of the meet will be shown Saturday on USATF.TV, while both Universal Sports (4-5 p.m. ET) and NBC Sports Network (5-7 p.m. ET) will show live action on TV.
