PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago – Vol sophomore sprinter Jamol James posted an all-conditions lifetime best in the 100-meter dash on Saturday, finishing fourth in a windy 10.08 seconds at the Trinidad & Tobago National Championships at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.
James needed to finish in the top three to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in the event, which are slated for August 10-18 in Moscow, Russia. However, his mark was good enough to earn him a place on the T&T 4x100m relay team. James was a part of T&T’s 4x100mR pool for the 2012 Olympics, but did not run in the finals. The squad won the bronze medal in London.
Having recorded his wind-legal personal record of 10.17 on the same track last summer, James earned his way into Saturday night’s finals by winning his preliminary heat and taking second in the semifinals. In the semis, the Chaguanas native clocked in at 10.09 with a wind reading of +2.7 meters per second. The top three in the finals all went sub-10 seconds with a tailwind of 3.2 mps. Keston Bledman led the way in 9.86, while former LSU Tiger Richard Thompson clocked in at 9.91 to take second. Former Kentucky standout Rondel Sorrillo rounded out the top three in 9.99.
Back at the USA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Olympic champion and former Vol Aries Merritt advanced to Sunday’s 110m hurdles semifinals by winning his heat. Merritt crossed the line in a wind-aided 13.25 seconds. Merritt, who owns the world record of 12.80, will race at 3:40 p.m. ET tomorrow.
On the women’s side, Sarah Brown, who ran as Sarah Bowman at Tennessee, took sixth place in the 1,500m finals. Running for New Balance, Brown crossed the line in 4 minutes, 30.99 seconds. Treniere Moser won her fourth USATF National Championship in 4:28.62, while 17-year-old phenom Mary Cain took second in 4:28.76.
Former Lady Vol Dee Dee Trotter, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in the 400m, advanced to Sunday’s semifinals in the women’s 200m with a second place finish in heat two. Competing for Saucony, Trotter clocked in at a wind-aided 22.54 seconds. Running next to her was Lady Vol freshman Felicia Brown, who was unable to advance to the semis with a time of 23.59.
Two-time SEC champion Ellen Wortham was in action in the women’s 400m hurdles on Saturday at Drake Stadium. However, the former Lady Vol was unable to qualify for tomorrow’s finals with a readout of 59.56 seconds, good for seventh in the opening heat.
Running for Memphis Pioneers, James returns to action at the Trinidad & Tobago National Championships on Sunday in the 200m and 4x100m relay.
In Des Moines, Merritt and Trotter will conclude action for Tennessee athletes at the USA Outdoor Championships. Trotter will compete in the 200m semifinals at 3:22 p.m. ET, while Merritt will run in the 110m hurdle semis at 3:40 p.m. ET. The women’s 200m and men’s 110mH finals are slated for 5:20 p.m. and 5:52 p.m., respectively.
A live online broadcast of the meet will be shown Sunday on USATF.TV, while Universal Sports (2-3 p.m. ET), NBC Sports Network (3-4 p.m. ET) and NBC (4-6 p.m. ET) will show live action on TV.
