Merritt Books Trip To Moscow In 110mH

June 23, 2013

DES MOINES, Iowa - With two former Tennessee track & field standouts concluding the action at the 2013 USA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Olympic champion and world record holder Aries Merritt booked his trip to the IAAF World Championships in the 110-meter hurdles on Sunday.

The World Championships will be held in Moscow, Russia, from August 10-18 this season.

A seven-time All-American and two-time NCAA Champion with the Vols, Merritt secured his place in the eight-man finals by placing second in the opening flight of the semifinals. The London Olympics gold medalist crossed the line in a wind-aided 13.09 seconds in the semis.

With the top three earning the right to represent Team USA at the World Championships, Merritt recovered from a slow start to finish third in the finals in 13.23 seconds. Former USC standout Ryan Wilson won his first-career national championship in 13.08 seconds, while former American Record holder David Oliver took second in 13.11. Merritt currently holds both the World and American Record in the event, which he set last season in Brussels in 12.80.

Former Lady Vol Dee Dee Trotter was also competing on Sunday at Drake Stadium, but the 400m specialist failed to advance out of the women's 200m semifinal round. Trotter placed fifth in the opening heat in 22.85 seconds, just .01 seconds out of qualifying for the finals.

After taking fourth place in the 100m on Saturday night, Vol sophomore sprinter Jamol James did not compete in either the 200m or 4x100m relay at the Trinidad & Tobago National Championships on Sunday. James will join Merritt in Moscow as one of T&T's 4x100m relay team members. He posted an all-conditions lifetime best in the 100m at the meet, crossing the line in a wind-aided 10.08 seconds.
