LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Junior Peter Okwera wins second event of the year to headline Tennessee's top six team finishes Saturday at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic

Okwera edged out Louisville's Ernest Kibet by two second to win 8k race in 24 minutes, 20.39 seconds Stephan Derlath also earned honors by finishing 21st as the Vols took fourth in the team standings.

"Peter ran really well and it helps with his confidence on the national scale," said J.J. Clark, Tennessee director of track and field/cross country. "Coming out of this meet with a victory is exciting."

Sophomore Alexis Panisse led the women's team for the second consecutive meet with a sixth place finish in the 5k. With three runners in the top 30, the Tennessee women finished sixth overall.

INSIDE THE MEN'S RACE:
The Tennessee men's cross country team continued building upon this season's success at the Greater Louisville Classic finishing fourth.

Peter Okwera led the Volunteer charge by winning his second race of the year with a time of 24:20.39. His victory at the Belmont Opener was his first collegiate win, and today's victory marks his third top five finish of the year.

Rounding out Tennessee's top five scorers was Stephen Derlath (21st - 25:07.75), Austin Whitelaw (31st - 25:17.40), Daniel Tobin (57th - 25:36.35), and J.R. Creekmore (63rd - 25:38.09).

"From a team standpoint, we had a better team race in our last meet performance," Clark said. "The fact that we've done better in the past, proves we can do better. We have to have everyone stay focused on the team goal at once."

INSIDE THE WOMEN'S RACE:
Coming of a victory at the Mountain Dew Invitational, Tennessee had three runners finish in the top 30 guiding the team to a sixth place finish overall.

Leading the way for the Lady Volunteers was Alexis Panisse placing 6th with a time of 17:23.50, her second consecutive top-10 finish. Chelsea Blasse completed the course in 17:54.88 for 27th, followed shortly thereafter by Emily Williams finishing 29th (17:55.48).

The other scorers for the Lady Vols were Amirah Johnson finishing 77th (18:33.67) and Patvia Lowery 104th (18:49.29). Senior Kelsey Kane did not finish the course.

"We had a solid 1-2-3 showing," Clark said. "Kelsey Kane was not her typical self today, so I know we have room there to grow," Clark said. "On the whole, we are looking forward to continuing our training cycle and peaking for the SEC meet."
