Okwera Runs at NCAA XC Meet

Nov. 23, 2013

TERRA HAUTE, Ind. -- Junior Peter Okwera placed 192nd individually Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Okwera completed the 10K course in 32 minutes, 12.5 seconds, to finish 192nd of 253 runners in the national field.

While the end of the season did not go as planned, Okwera enjoyed a standout junior season at Tennessee. He earned All-SEC and All-Region honors thanks to top-10 finishes at the conference and NCAA South Regional meets. He also collected his first two individual victories at the Belmont Opener and the Greater Louisville Classic.

Last year, Okwera placed 30th at NCAAs to earn All-American honors.

Colorado won the team championship title, and Oregon freshman Edward Cheserek won the individual championship in 29:41.1.

The championship meet officially marks the end of the cross country season for Tennessee.

Five individuals earned All-Region honors: Okwera, Daniel Tobin and Austin Whitelaw for the men and Chelsea Blaase and Alexis Panisse for the women.

Blaase nearly joined Okwera in the NCAA championship field. She finished 10th at the regional meet and was two seconds shy of earning one of the individual bids. She also recorded a top-10 finish at the SEC Championships.

Blaase, Panisse, Emily Williams and Amirah Johnson -- four of the Lady Vols' top five runners this year -- will be returning next season.
