Track Opens Season with 8 Qualifiers

The Tennessee men's track and field team opened its outdoor season Saturday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The defending SEC outdoor team champions earned nine personal-best marks and eight regional-qualifying marks.

"I'm pleased our 800 guys picked up where they left off from the indoor season," head coach Bill Webb said. "We had a good spring break. We accomplished some things in training and met some objectives in the meet. We rested some people and met some individual needs. We had some first-meet objectives and we had to be cautious with some people because of nicks and scrapes. We look forward to Georgia Tech and getting back to class next week."

Seniors Yarrick Kincaid and Andrew Dawson led the Vols with a 1-2 finish in the 800. Kincaid won the event with a regional-qualifying time of 1:49.53. Dawson also recorded a regional-qualifying time, finishing second in 1:49.59. Senior Rubin Williams won the 100 in a regional-qualifying time of 10.32 one week after winning the 200 at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Freshman Charlton Rolle won the 110 hurdles in 14.31 and the 400 hurdles after recording a personal-best clocking of 52.83. Sophomore Brenard Wilson took top honors in the long jump with his personal-best mark of 23-4 1/2.

Richard Wooten and Nick Panezich earned Tennessee's first two regional-qualifying marks of the outdoor season by eclipsing the regional standard in the hammer throw late Friday night. Wooten placed fourth with his throw of 198-3 and Panezich was fifth after recording a personal-best throw of 192-6, which improves his standing in ninth on Tennessee's all-time performance list in the event. Panezich also grabbed a regional-qualifying mark in the shot put with his second-place throw of 54-11 1/2. The junior placed third in the discus with a toss of 169-2. Fellow junior Matthew Maloney was 10th in the hammer with a throw of 176-2.

Tennessee's 4x400 relay team of Nathan Grace, Samdi Fraser, John Hewitt and Kyle Stevenson earned a regional-qualifying time of 3:09.76 and placed second. Hewitt also finished second in the 400 hurdles after recording a personal-best time of 52.89. Stevenson was second in the 200 with his 21.74 clocking. Fraser ran to a personal-best time of 21.78 while placing sixth in the 200. Fellow sophomore Grace finished eighth in the event in 21.89, and senior Blake Jones stopped the clock in 22.03.

Junior Akeem Hardnett finished third in the long jump after recording a personal-best leap of 22-10. Wilson finished eighth in the high jump after clearing 6-5 and not attempting another height. Sophomore Jonathan Fluellen tied for fourth in the long jump with a leap of 22-9 1/4 and finished sixth in the 100 in 11.02.

Decathletes Michael Ayers and Brad Holtz each began preparations for the 10-event discipline. Holtz tied his personal-best clearance in the pole vault by vaulting over the bar at a regional-qualifying height of 16-10 3/4. The sophomore also threw the javelin a personal-best 158-1 and ran the 100 in 11.62. Freshman Ayers finished eighth in the 100 in 11.12.

Freshman Mike Brodsky and Axel Mostrag finished eighth in the 800 and 1,500, respectively. Sophomore Justin Hansen crossed the finish line ninth in the 800 and was followed by senior Paul Cross in 10th and freshman Michael Spooner in 11th. Spooner also ran to a personal-best time of 3:56.43 in the 1,500. Senior Matt Piccarello finished 13th in the 1,500 and 3,000, while freshman Chris Rapp earned a personal-best clocking of 8:41.68 in the 3,000. Junior Andrew Press placed 18th in the 3,000 and 20th in the 1,500.

The Vols return to the track next weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta.
