KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee track & field team will send 25 participants in 19 events to this year's NCAA East Preliminary Round in Greensboro, N.C., from May 23-25. The Vols qualified 15, while the Lady Vols will send 10 athletes to compete at Irwin Belk Track inside Aggie Stadium at North Carolina A&T.
With the top 48 declared student-athletes and top 24 relay teams earning the bids, 25 Big Orange qualifiers will compete for the right to attend the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships, slated for June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. The top 12 finishers in individual events and relays at the East and West Preliminary Round meets will advance to historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
Vol qualifiers include Tavis Bailey (discus, shot put), Jake Blankenship (pole vault), Chase Brannon (pole vault), Cameron Brown (hammer), Antonio Carter (4x400mR), Arnez Hardnick (4x100mR), Matthew Hoty (shot put), Jamol James (100m, 4x100mR), Reggie Juin (4x100mR), Terrance Livingston (400m, 4x400mR), Jarael Nelvis (100m, 4x100mR, 4x400mR), Tyler Porter (pole vault), Kyle Quinn (javelin), Drew Thomas (hammer) and Michael Williams (4x400mR).
Blankenship (18-4.75/5.61m) and Brannon (17-9/5.41m) enter the meet with the No. 3 and No. 4 pole vault marks in the East, respectively. Fellow vaulter Porter sits 12th (17-5/5.31m). Hoty enters the shot put competition with the third-best mark (62-8.75/19.12m) in the region, while fellow throwers Bailey (195-3/59.51m) and Quinn (227-6/69.35m) rank sixth and 12th in the discus and javelin, respectively. The Vol 4x100m relay currently stands eighth in the East with a time of 39.75 seconds.
Lady Volunteer qualifiers include Bianca Blair (100mH), Felicia Brown (200m, 400m), Erin Champion (pole vault), Hannah Davidson (5,000m), Linda Hadfield (pole vault), Aslynn Halvorson (discus), Kia Jackson (100m, long jump), Kianna Ruff (800m), Nijgia Snapp (800m) and Cassie Wertman (shot put, discus).
Snapp paces the Lady Vols into Greensboro with the No. 7 mark (2:05.00) in the 800m, while Brown enters standing 10th (23.19) and 12th (53.01) in the 200m and 400m, respectively. Jackson is 10th in the East in the women's 100m with a time of 11.42 seconds and will also compete in the long jump. On the infield, Wertman leads UT with the 12th-best shot put distance (53-2.25/16.21m) and 30th-best discus mark (164-3/50.08m) in the region. The pole vault duo of Champion and Hadfield stand 28th and 29th, respectively, both with a season-best height of 13-1.5 (4.00m).
All meet tickets for the 2013 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Round are now on sale. Tickets are required each day of competition. All seats are general admission. Will call orders may be picked up at the Sullivan Street ticket booths beginning on Thursday, May 23. Tickets can be purchased by calling the A&T ticket office at (336) 334-7749.
