Five More Qualify for National Meet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Five more members of the Tennessee track and field team qualified for the national meet Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional.

Tennessee's qualifiers included: Jake Blankenship and Chase Brannon (men's pole vault), Tavis Bailey (men's discus), Cassie Wertman (women's shot put) and Felicia Brown (women's 200 meters). They joined Lady Vols Alexis Panisse and Felecia Majors, who qualified Friday in the 800 meters and 400 meters respectively.

Twelve from each event at the regional meet advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. The meet will be held June 12-14.

Sophomore Jake Blankenship and Chase Brannon will represent the Vols in the pole vault. Blankenship was third in the competition, vaulting 17-5.5 (5.32m). Brannon will return to the NCAA field for the final time. The senior was 10th, also clearing 17-5.5.

Junior Tavis Bailey booked his ticket to NCAAs from the discus ring. After finishing just one spot away from qualifying in shot put, Bailey excelled at his top event. He placed sixth in the region with a throw of 201-1 (61.31m).

Sophomore Cassie Wertman also qualified for the national meet, doing so in the women's shot put. The UT sophomore threw a career-best distance 56-7.5 (17.26m) to place second in the competition. The throw is the second-best in school history.

Senior Aslynn Halvorson was 22nd in the shot put (51-5.5/15.68m).

On the track, the Lady Vols had three representatives in the 200 meters.

Sophomore Felicia Brown qualified for the outdoor national for a second time in her career. She won the first heat of the quarterfinals in a time of 23.34, the third-fastest time in the field. Sophomore Emily Yarnell was just one place out of qualifying, taking 13th in 23.66. Freshman Felecia Majors was 16th in 23.75.
