MOSCOW -- Former Tennessee star Justin Gatlin finished second in the 100-meter dash Sunday at the IAAF World Championships.
Gatlin had the lead early, but two-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt rallied to win in a time of 9.77 seconds. Gatlin crossed the finish line in 9.85 to earn silver.
Aries Merritt, coming off his Olympic gold from a year ago, advanced to the semifinals of the 110 high hurdles. He won his heat in the preliminaries in the fourth-fastest overall time in 13.32. Fellow American David Oliver had the fastest prelim time of 13.05.
Sarah Bowman Brown also advanced in the 1,500 run. After finding out just days ago that she would even compete at the championships, Brown finished 22nd in 4:09.00.
In other action, Patricia Brown advanced to the semifinals of the 400 and placed 24th (52.62)
