Sept. 12, 2013
Tennessee: 2-0 (2-0 SEC)
In our last event: Our men's cross country opened their season with the Belmont opener on August 30. Half of the Volunteers that competed finished in the top 50 in the field of 116 runners. Coach JJ Clark stated, "It was exciting to see the men's team get going. They've had a good summer. No one graduated from last year, so I look forward to seeing their progress as the year continues."
Vol Spotlight: The Tennessee spotlight is on junior Peter Okwera. Okwera won his first collegiate cross country title in the Vol's season opener in Nashville. Racking up five top-ten finishes last season as a sophomore, so breaking through into the winners column is just the first of hopefully many exemplary achievements resulting from his dedication to his craft.
About this event: The men's race this weekend will be an 8k on the rolling hills grass course at Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course. This is the 25th running of this event, and this course will be the home for the 2013 SEC Championships in November. The race will begin at 7:55 a.m., with awards presentation to follow at 9:30 a.m.
Tennessee: 0-2 (0-2 SEC)
In our last event: At the Belmont Opener, the Lady Vols had our top six runners place in the top 55 of the field of 101. Director of track and field/cross country JJ Clark stated, "Our team on the women's side needs to gel a little more. That needs a little work. We'll see what we can do in the next six weeks. I believe we'll come together and run a much better race."
Lady Vol Spotlight: Emily Williams made a huge impact in her collegiate debut for Tennessee at the Belmont Opener. Williams finished 17th overall and was the first Lady Vol to complete the course with a time of 18:49.05. In his post-race remarks Coach Clark said, "The women had a bright spot in Emily, our newcomer, being our first runner this meet. I thought that she did a great job on that."
