2003: Saw first action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2001 ... Served as both a starter and reliever, working his way back into the starting rotation in the final four weeks of the season ... Posted a 4-1 mark with a 5.44 ERA in 41.1 innings with 27 strikeouts and six walks ... Had second-best strikeout-to-walk ratio on team of 4.5:1 ... Made six starts among his 15 appearances ... Vols were 4-2 when he started ... Started the first two weekends before being relegated to the bullpen for two months, making nine relief appearances ... HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn., where he was a two-time all-state, three-time all-region and all-conference selection ... Named to the 1999 Tennessee Sports Writers Association's All-Northeast Tennessee Class AAA team and the Big Seven All-Conference squad ... Went 7-3 with three saves and 1.02 ERA in 75.2 innings as a senior with 137 strikeouts and 11 walks ... Also hit .500 with 6 home runs, 12 doubles and 35 RBI as a catcher ... Was the 1998 Class AAA State Tournament MVP as team won the title with a 33-8 mark ... As a junior, he was named the TBCA Player of the Year, Elite Team Player of the Year, District Player of the Year and honorable mention All-America ... He compiled a 13-1 mark with three saves and a 0.89 ERA, striking out 122 in 87.0 innings ... He also hit .489 with 7 home runs, 33 RBI and 22 stolen
