Knoxville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Volunteers could only muster five hits, but they managed to parlay 12 Morehead State Eagle walks into a 13-0 season-opening victory at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Riley (1-0), who earned the win, struckout seven in five innings of work, giving up one hit. Massey struckout four in three innings, while Eisemann closed out the ninth.
Kyle Norrid got the Vols (1-0) started as he delivered a three-run home run in his first collegiate at-bat for a quick 3-0 lead in the first.
The Vols then added four more in the fourth as they benefited from four walks and an error for a 7-0 lead. Walter Sevilla delivered the big blow with a two-run single.
Tennessee then added two in the fifth, one more in the sixth and one in the seventh on a single by Jordan Czarniecki. A double by Jimbo Watson and an RBI single by Chad LeGate following a sacrifice fly in the eighth gave the Vols their final victory margin.
Casey Campbell (0-1) took the loss as he worked three innings. Kevin Bryant, Paul Rhodes and Nate Lowe accounted for the three Eagle hits.
Eagle first baseman Cary Page twisted his left knee in his first at-bat and was lost for the game. After he lined a shot off the fence in left-center, Page immediately fell to the ground at home. He is listed as questionable for the remainder of the series.
Game two of the series is Saturday at Noon ET.
