Knoxville, Tenn. - Shortstop Brian Cleveland drove in four runs while four Tennessee pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts in an 8-2 victory over the Morehead State Eagles. The win gives the Volunteers the series win as they improved to 2-0 on the season.

Chad LeGate went 3-for-5 to lead the 11-hit Tennessee attack.

Derek Tharpe (1-0), a junior transfer from Samford, struck out a career-high 11 batters in five innings for the win. He was touched for one run on four hits.

Cleveland got Tennessee started with a two-run double off the left field wall that gave the Vols a 2-0 lead in the third. Jordan Czarniecki led off the frame with a single and was followed by Walter Sevilla who drew a walk before scoring.

Tennessee added three more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. Czarniecki provided the key hit with a two-run single. He would later score on Cleveland's sacrifice fly.

The Vols then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh for the final 8-2 margin. LeGate singled home Alex Suarez who doubled with one out in the fifth. Then in the sixth, Sevilla led off with a triple and was later driven in on Cleveland's ground out for his fourth RBI. LeGate would score on Sevilla's double in the seventh for Tennessee's eighth run.

Joey Andrews worked two innings of relief, striking out three, allowing one run on two hits. Rob Fitzgerald and Steve Wesley closed out the game with one shutout inning apiece and three strikeouts.

Morehead State (0-2) got on the board in the fourth when Brian Baarstad scored on a wild pitch after doubling to lead off the frame. They added their second run in the seventh when Bryan Ingram scored on Dustin Miles' double.

 

 

Augie Cabral (0-1) took the loss for the Eagles.

The series finale is Sunday at 2 p.m.
