KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee co-captain Eli Iorg went 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run as the Volunteers baseball team defeated No. 13-ranked Mississippi State 2-1 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Both of Sunday's games are scheduled for seven innings.
Vols ace Luke Hochevar pitched all seven innings for Tennessee, allowing one run on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. The Vols have now won each of the last seven games that Hochevar has started. The junior is 7-1 this season with an SEC-best 65 strikeouts.
Then in the top of fourth inning, Mississippi State's Thomas Berkery hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in Joseph Hunter from third to tie the game at 1-1.
Iorg plated the winning run on a single to left field by Chase Headley in the bottom of the fifth.
Mississippi State senior Alan Johnson took the loss after giving up two runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Tennessee improved to 19-8 (4-3 SEC), and MSU fell to 17-6 (4-3 SEC).
