KNOXVILLE -- Alex Suarez hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh-inning Sunday to give the Tennessee baseball team a 2-1 victory over No. 13-ranked Mississippi State in the second game of an abbreviated doubleheader. The Volunteers won both seven-inning games against the Bulldogs to earn a shortened-series sweep and improve to 20-8 (5-3 SEC).
The two teams took a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the seventh-inning, and with one out and two men on base, Suarez sent a single to center field that fell just out of reach of diving MSU outfielder Joseph Hunter. Freshman catcher J.P. Arencibia scored from second base on the play to give the Vols their first SEC series sweep since winning three games at Georgia last season.
Tennessee had previously posted 2-1 win in game one of the doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs went up 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Ed Easley scored from second base on a throwing error. But Tennessee countered in the bottom of the inning, as junior Chase Headley drove in Eric King on an RBI single up the middle.
True freshman James Adkins started on the mound for UT and lasted all seven innings to improve to 5-1 on the year. The left-hander from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., gave up one run on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Bulldogs starter Todd Doolittle dropped to 3-2 this season after surrendering two runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Tennessee concludes an eight-game homestand when it hosts Eastern Kentucky Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
