Memorial Service Set For Former Vol Scott Dean

Jan. 28, 2014

Scott Dean, a former catcher for the Vols and assistant coach at nearby Farragut High School, died on Sunday. A memorial service is set for 6 p.m. ET Thursday at Central Baptist Church of Bearden. Dean was 28 years old.

"Scott was a great young man,” said Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano. “He was the kind of guy that his players liked as a friend, respected as a mentor and trusted like a father. I'm sure his qualities were likewise as a teammate too. Our community lost a true champion in every aspect with the passing of Scott Dean.”

A native of Knoxville and a 2004 graduate of Farragut, Dean served primarily as Tennessee’s bullpen catcher for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He made his Tennessee debut on May 8 against Tennessee Temple, suiting up behind the plate for the final inning of a UT victory.

Dean attended Lincoln Memorial University in 2005 before transferring home to UT. He appeared in 38 games, starting 34 behind the plate for the Railsplitters. He collected 30 hits and drove in 22 runs.

As a player, Dean helped the Farragut Admirals win back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004. He earned all-district honors while hitting .350 as a senior. Farragut posted a 48-1 record and ended the season ranked No. 2 in the nation in 2003 and followed with a 46-2 season in 2004.

In 2010, Dean joined the Farragut baseball coaching staff as an assistant under head coach Matt Buckner. Farragut won two state titles (2010-11) and was state runner-up (2013) during Dean’s tenure. Dean was a coach to former Admirals and current Vols Eric Freeman, Nick Senzel, Kyle Serrano, A.J. Simcox and Nick Williams.
