Getting the starting nod in Wednesday's midweek competition against Appalachian State, Cox threw four strong innings on a pitch count. He allowed just two hits and one run by the Mountaineers en route to his first win of the season.

Cox came out of the bullpen Saturday and tossed 5.1 innings of no-hit ball against the No. 29 UNLV Rebels. He struck out a career-high five in the outing, while throwing 50 of his 73 pitches for strikes. A blown save in the ninth inning kept Cox from getting his second win of the week, but the Vols beat the Rebels in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off throwing error.

Notes: A local product of Farragut High School in Knoxville, freshman designated hitter Nick Senzel closed his second week as a Vol with a .333 average, .750 slugging percentage and .500 on-base clip. Senzel led the Vols with five RBIs, five runs scored and four walks this week. He was also tied for the team lead in triples (1) and home runs (1). The rookie is now hitting .381 for the season.

Senzel broke open a two-run game against No. 29 UNLV on Friday with a seventh-inning grand slam. Up 4-2 in the inning, Senzel sent a 1-1 pitch over the left-center wall to put UT on top 8-2. His slam proved to be crucial as the Vols held off a ninth-inning rally to win 8-7. It was UT's first grand slam since former Vol Ethan Bennett hit one against Alabama A&M on March 15, 2011. Bennett was also a freshman that season.

On Sunday, Senzel added two more base knocks, including a two-out RBI single in the third inning to help UT sweep the Rebels.

Tennessee Weekly Notes

After piling on the runs in the season-opening series against Purdue, the Diamond Vols had to battle against Appalachian State and No. 29 UNLV to stay unbeaten this week. With a midweek win over Appalachian State on Wednesday and a sweep of the Rebels over the weekend, Tennessee improved to 7-0 for just the fourth time in program history and the second time under third-year head coach Dave Serrano. UT's best start in program history is 8-0, which the Vols did in both 1992 and 2003.

After besting the Boilermakers by a 31-4 combined run margin to open the season, Tennessee won four close battles this week. The Vols won all four contests by a combined six runs, including two one-run victories over UNLV.

Freshman Nick Senzel and senior Scott Price led the Big Orange on the offensive end, both hitting .333 (4-for-12) for the Volunteers this week. Price led off the week with a home run to left field to spark a 5-3 win over Appalachian State on Wednesday. He became the first Vol to leadoff a game with a homer since former Vol Khayyan Norfork accomplished the feat on March 17, 2011 against Austin Peay.

Senzel continued the hot start to his career with game-deciding grand slam in Friday's opener against No. 29 UNLV. With the Vols up 4-2 in the seventh inning, Senzel sent a 1-1 pitch over the left-center wall to clear the bases and put UT on top, 8-2. The slam proved to be crucial for the Vols, as UNLV posted a five-run ninth inning, but was ultimately held off by Tennessee closer Drake Owenby in the 8-7 UT win. Senzel's slam was UT's first grand slam since former Vol Ethan Bennett hit one against Alabama A&M on March 15, 2011. Bennett was also a freshman that season. Senzel led Tennessee with five RBIs, five runs scored and four walks this week. He's currently third on the team with a .381 average. Price ranks second in the category with a .391 clip. Both sit behind sophomore catcher David Houser (.412), who went 3-for-9 with three RBIs this week.

On the mound, Tennessee had standout performances from starters Andy Cox, Andrew Lee and Nick Williams, as well as reliever Trevor Bettencourt and closer Drake Owenby. The Vols combined for a team ERA of 3.00 with 25 strikeouts over 36 innings pitched. In two outings this week, Cox picked up one win and posted a 0.96 ERA over 9.1 innings. He allowed just one run and two hits all week, getting the win on Wednesday vs. Appalachian State, and throwing 5.1 innings of no-hit baseball against UNLV out of the bullpen on Saturday.

Making the start Friday, Williams allowed just three hits and two runs over six innings to earn his second win of the season. Lee anchored the series sweep with a 6.2-inning, four-hit game on Sunday. He retired 14 batters in a row through the middle innings and improved to 2-0 on the campaign. Out of the bullpen, closer Drake Owenby picked up two saves and a win in three appearances.

Tennessee continues its season-long 12-game home stretch this weekend with a three-game series against Quinnipiac (0-3). The Vols look to tie their best start in program history on Friday night at 5 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
