Notes: Freshman Andrew Lee shrugged off a slow start to his collegiate career and broke through in a big way this weekend, leading the Vols to a series sweep of Alcorn State this past weekend.

The 6-5 designated hitter was 7-for-14 with five runs scored, three doubles, a stolen base and a team-high seven RBIs over the course of UT's three wins over the Braves. Lee, who entered the weekend with just four hits and one RBI in his first eight games as a Vol, got the ball rolling with a hit late in the Friday night contest.

The next afternoon, he exploded with a 4-for-5 performance that included two doubles, two runs scored and five RBIs. In the third inning of that game alone, he was 2-for-2 with four RBIs as he had a run-scoring single and bases-loaded, three-RBI double during the nine-run frame. His five RBIs on Saturday are the most in a single-game by a Vol so far this season.

Lee closed out the series with another strong effort in the Sunday contest, driving in two more runs as he was 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Notes: Senior Zack Godley set the tone for Tennessee's dominating series sweep of Alcorn State with seven shutout innings on Friday night.

Coming off a career-high 8.1 inning-effort against Notre Dame last weekend, he followed that up by striking out eight and allowing just three hits to lead the Vols to their first shutout of the season, a 16-0 rout of the Braves. The win was the first of the year for the undisputed UT ace who now holds a 3.29 ERA and a 1-1 record through his first four starts.

He has pitched a team-high 27.1 innings this year, striking out 27 and holding opposing hitters to a .230 batting average. Over his last two starts, the Bamberg, S.C., native has yielded just a single earned run while fanning 12 over 15.1 frames.

Tennessee Weekly Notes

Tennessee brought its overall record back to .500 at 7-7 by earning its first sweep of the 2013 season with three victories over Alcorn State this weekend at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville.

After a midweek contest against Belmont was rained out, the Volunteers exploded for 17 hits in a dominating 16-0 rout of the Braves on Friday night. Senior Zack Godley struck out eight over seven innings as he and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout.

Leading the offensive outburst were the first three hitters in the UT lineup - Taylor Smart, Will Maddox and Scott Price - as they combined to go 6-for-9 with nine RBIs, four walks and four runs scored. All three Vols posted 2-for-3 efforts with Price driving in two, Smart plating three runners and Maddox tying his career high with four RBIs.

The following day, freshman Andrew Lee broke out in a big way, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs in a 13-6 triumph over Alcorn State. Two of hits came in the same inning as he had an RBI single and a three-run double during a nine-run third inning for the Big Orange. Fellow classmate Trevor Charpie came out of the bullpen to win his first collegiate contest, striking out five in five innings of relief.

On Sunday, the Big Orange completed the sweep with a 12-4 victory. Once again, a true freshman earned his first career win as Aaron Quillen fanned seven over six innings. Andy Cox and Trevor Bettencourt followed with scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth before handing the ball off to Nick Williams who struck out the side on nine pitches to close out the sweep in dominating fashion. The weekend sweep was UT's first since winning all three games against Alabama last season.

For the weekend, the Tennessee offense hit at a .398 clip with 16 extra-base hits and stolen bases in 14-of-15 attempts. Lee led the way, hitting a cool .500 (7-for-14) with five runs scored and a team-high seven RBIs. Pierce Bily also hit .500 (5-for-10) with five runs of his own, four RBIs, three walks and three stolen bases.

On the mound, the Orange and White limited Alcorn State to just 15 hits and a .163 batting average over the course of the three-game set.

Tennessee will close out a five-game homestand with a pair of midweek contests against Western Kentucky. Freshman right-hander Trevor Bettencourt will make his first career start on Tuesday, while the Vols will give the ball to first-year southpaw Andy Cox on Wednesday. Both games are set for 6 p.m. starts.

Following those games, UT will hit the road to open Southeastern Conference play at Alabama, March 15-17.
