Notes: Maddox was inserted into the leadoff spot in the Tennessee lineup this weekend and took full advantage of the opportunity, hitting at a team-best .462 clip (6-for-13) with three runs scored and an RBI.

The freshman has now hit safely in seven straight contests, tying him for the longest hitting streak by a UT player this season. During that stretch, he is hitting .429 (9-for-21) to increase his batting average nearly 100 points on the season from .214 to .306.

This week, Maddox posted a pair of two-hit efforts to give him three multi-hit games this season, good for second on the team.

Tennessee Weekly Notes

Tennessee split its four decisions this week, opening with wins over Ball State and ULM on Wednesday and Friday before dropping consecutive contests to the Warhawks on Saturday and Sunday to run its record to 10-5 on the season.

The Volunteers will have one final tune-up before SEC play when they host Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. That contest will be televised on FOX Sports South/FOX Sports Tennessee.

This past week, the Big Orange got a monster effort from Drew Steckenrider to lead it past the Cardinals in a mid-week matchup, 9-7. The junior was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a mammoth home run in addition to his efforts on the mound where he followed his longball with two perfect innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.

On Friday it was the "Zack Godley Show," as he paced the Vols to their first shutout of the season, 4-0, with 8.0 scoreless innings in which he struck out a career-high 10 batters.

The following day, the Orange and White rallied from three runs down to send the game to extra innings, only to see ULM walk away with a 10-inning victory. Steckenrider was lights out in that game as well, throwing a season-high 4.0 frames out of the bullpen, striking out a career-high seven. In his two appearances out of the bullpen this week, Steckenrider allowed just one hit in 6.0 near-perfect innings, striking out 12 of the 20 batters that he squared off against.

On Sunday, ULM followed a very similar script, jumping ahead early, 4-0. Tennessee rallied to tie the game in the sixth when freshman Jared Allen hit his first career longball, but the Warhawks had an immediate answer, scoring three times in the seventh en route to a 7-4 triumph.

For the week, freshman Will Maddox led the Vols at the plate, going 6-for-13 (.462), including his first two games at the top of the UT lineup. Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano remains one win away from his 300th career victory as a Division I head coach with a record of 299-144-1 (.673).

Player of the Week Nomination

Zack Godley
FRESHMAN
RHP - 6-3 - 245
Bamberg, S.C.

Weekly Stats:1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, .120 Opp. BA, 0.63 WHIP

Notes:After throwing seven solid innings to pick up a win over No. 16 Texas in last weekend's Houston College Classic, Godley one-upped himself against ULM this week, twirling a career-high 8.0 shutout frames in his first career Friday night start to lead the Vols to a 4-0 victory and their first shutout of the season.

The junior right-hander struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just three hits before handing the ball over to UT closer Nick Williams for the final inning. Godley threw first-pitch strikes to 21 of the 30 batters that he faced and allowed just one ULM runner to reach third base as he became the first UT hurler to record 10 punchouts since Steven Gruver did so against Canisius on Feb. 25, 2011.

The win improved Godley's record for the season to a perfect 3-0 and lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.44. He is holding opposing hitters to a .193 batting average and leads the Tennessee squad with 23 strikeouts in 25.0 innings pitched.
