Tennessee Weekly Notes

The Tennessee Volunteers lost their first two games of the week - a midweek matchup against ETSU and Friday night's series opener against Vanderbilt - but the Vols rebounded to win Saturday's game against the SEC rival in walk off fashion and shutout the Commodores on Sunday to win the series. The Vols currently stand to 21-9 overall and 5-7 in SEC action.

The Orange and White outhit ETSU 6-3 on Tuesday, but a two-run home run by defending National Player of the Week Clinton Freeman proved to be enough for the Bucs, who topped the Vols 2-1. Vanderbilt ace Tyler Beede settled in after a shaky first inning on Friday, allowing just five hits and four runs while striking out six over eight innings. Vandy closer Carson Fulmer picked up his ninth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. Tennessee got to Fulmer late in a marathon game Saturday. UT was down to its last strike with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, when freshman Nathaniel Maggio delivered a walk-off single to left field to lift the Vols to a 10-9 win to even the series. Sophomore Derek Lance was 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the win.

UT carried that momentum into Sunday's rubber match, posting four runs through the first three innings en route to a 7-0 shutout. UT pitchers Kyle Serrano, Andy Cox and Andrew Lee combined for a two-hit shutout to lead the Vols to their first series win over Vandy since 2010. Christin Stewart and A.J. Simcox each had multi-hit games, with Stewart driving in three of the Vols' seven runs. Stewart hit his fourth triple of the season, while senior Scott Price added his third. UT leads the SEC with 12 triples this season. Derek Lance also blasted a home run in Sunday's win. Kyle Serrano picked up the win, giving up just two hits over 5 1/3 innings.

UT handed Vanderbilt just its second regular season series loss since April 20-22, 2012. The win also marked the first nine-inning shutout of Vandy since March 3, 1985 for the Vols. It was Tennessee's first series win over a top-five team since taking the final two games at No. 1 LSU from April 17-19, 2009.

Lance finished the week with four hits and a team-high tying five RBIs. He hit his first career dinger and also added a double. On the mound, Andy Cox continued his lights out sophomore season. He gave up just one hit and one run (unearned) over three appearances and 7 1/3 innings. Cox struck out a team-best seven on the week.

The Big Orange looks to carry its momentum on the road, playing nine of its next 12 away from home. The Vols return to action on Tuesday in Cookeville, Tenn., when they take on Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. ET. UT travels to Athens, Ga., for a SEC East series from April 10-12 this week. Thursday's game will be broadcast live on ESPNU. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET.
