30th Ranked Vols Play MTSU Tuesday in Winchester

Fresh of a home series win over Alabama this past weekend, the 30th-ranked Tennessee baseball team breaks briefly from Southeastern Conference play Tuesday when it travels to Winchester, Tenn., for a neutral-site matchup against Middle Tennessee at Gamble Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.

The game was originally slated to take place in Murfreesboro, Tenn., but was moved to ongoing construction at the Blue Raiders’ home facility.

Loel E. Bennett Stadium at Gamble Sports Complex was originally built for an independent minor-league baseball team, the Tennessee Tomahawks, who played in Winchester from 1996-98. The stadium has a seating capacity of 2,000.

Tickets to Tuesday’s game are $10, and only cash will be accepted at the gate. For more information regarding tickets, contact the Middle Tennessee ticket office at (615) 898-5198 or 1-888-YES-MTSU.

The Vols take a 22-13 (9-6 SEC) record into their second meeting this season with Middle Tennessee. The Big Orange handed the Blue Raiders a 5-3 loss in Knoxville on March 11. Vols sophomore Jeff Lockwood homered and earned a save in that game, while junior reliever Danny Wiltz picked up the win. Tennessee junior Cody Brown also homered in that contest, helping UT post the win despite being out-hit by the Raiders 7-6.

Middle Tennessee currently owns an 18-14-1 (9-8 Sun Belt) record and is riding a five-game win streak that includes lone victories over Lipscomb and Belmont as well as a three-game sweep of Florida International. The Blue Raiders have hit 55 home runs in 33 games but sport a 6.00 staff ERA.

Tennessee, meanwhile, has hit 17 home runs during its 10 games thus far in the month of April.

Tuesday’s pitching matchup features Vols right-hander Steve Crnkovich (4-4, 5.32 ERA) against MTSU right-hander Chad Edwards (2-1, 4.61 ERA).
