Zach Osborne

May 19, 2009

The Southeastern Conference announced its 2009 baseball awards Tuesday and three Volunteers were among those honored. Sophomore catcher Blake Forsythe was a first-team All-SEC selection while freshman shortstop Zach Osborne was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Junior catcher Mike Moore also earned a spot on the SEC Baseball Community Service Team.

The All-SEC teams were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.

After only seeing action in 22 games as a freshman, Forsythe started 53 of 55 games behind the plate for Tennessee this season and turned in career numbers. The Memphis, Tenn., native hit .347 with 68 hits, 15 home runs and 46 RBIs. He also led the team with 40 walks and a .486 on-base percentage. Forsythe collected 19 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games. He also finished the season on an 11-game hitting streak during which he went 19-for-40 (.475) with 10 RBIs, four doubles, three home runs and nine walks.

Tennessee has now had an All-SEC catcher in each of the last four seasons.

Osborne started 54 games this season and hit .281 with 57 hits, eight doubles, four home runs and 33 RBIs. He also was the hardest Volunteer starter to strike out this season with only one strikeout per 9.6 at-bats. The Louisville, Ky., native finished the season with a team-high .325 average in SEC play. He drove in 24 runs on 37 hits including four doubles, a triple and four home runs. He also boasted a .967 fielding percentage in 30 conference games.

Since the SEC began naming an All-Freshman Team in 2004, Tennessee has had nine honorees.

Moore was among 12 players from around the league that made up the 2009 SEC Baseball Community Service Team. The catcher from Charlotte, N.C., graduated with a degree in Enterprise Management this month and has been very active with community service from the moment he stepped onto campus.

Moore participated in Light the Night for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as well as assisting with awarding/recognizing cancer survivors in Buddy's BBQ Race for the Cure. The junior was also a part of SAAC Holiday Dinner and SEC Can Food Drive. He helped purchase Christmas gifts for Teams for Tots and participated in Knoxville Park and Recs Clinic. Moore also made time to read to students at local Norwood Elementary School.

Alabama outfielder Kent Matthes was named the 2009 SEC Baseball Player of the Year, LSU starter Louis Coleman was voted SEC Pitcher of the Year, and Florida first baseman Preston Tucker and LSU reliever Matty Ott were named co-SEC Freshman of the Year. The coaches tabbed LSU skipper Paul Mainieri as SEC Coach of the Year.

Auburn outfielder Ben Jones was named the SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Vols junior Nick Hernandez was Tennessee's Scholar-Athlete nominee.
