Tennessee pitcher Nick Hernandez has been selected as a Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star alternate for the West Team, the league announced Sunday. A rising junior for the Vols, Hernandez is suiting up this summer for the Cotuit Kettleers.

Through six starts for Cotuit, Hernandez is 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA. The left-hander from Hialeah, Fla., has recorded 29 strikeouts against just six walks in 37 1/3 innings of action.

Scott Pickler, manager of defending Cape Cod League champion Yarmouth-Dennis and father of former Tennessee All-America Jeff Pickler (1996-98), will be at the helm of the East All-Stars. Jeff Pickler was named the 1998 SEC Baseball Player of the Year and also was a consensus first-team All-America second baseman that season.

The All-Star Game takes place Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham, Mass. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Fans can access a free live radio feed of the game by visiting http://www.wgbh.org/cainan and clicking on the “Listen” link. Neal Conan will call the play-by-play while the Cape League’s John Garner provides commentary on NPR affiliate WCAI FM 90.1.

WILTZ THROWS PERFECT NINTH INNING IN VALLEY LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME
Tennessee pitcher Danny Wiltz threw a perfect ninth inning for the South Team in the Valley League All-Star Game earlier this month at Casey Field in Covington, Va.

Wiltz, a rising senior from Miami, Fla., faced the minimum in the top of the ninth and recorded one strikeout. The game ended in a 5-5 tie.

In 15 appearances spanning 17 full innings for the Waynesboro (Va.) Generals, Wiltz has posted a 1-0 record with a team-best five saves and a 3.18 ERA. He has recorded 32 strikeouts while issuing only five walks. Opponents are batting just .190 against the right-handed Vol.

POLK CONTRIBUTES TO SOUTH DIVISION WIN IN NORTHWOODS LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME
Tennessee outfielder P.J. Polk went 1-for-1 with an RBI double while helping the South Division Team to an 8-4 victory in the Northwoods League All-Star Game last week at the “Duck Pond” in Madison, Wisc.

The crowd of 5,357 marked a league All-Star Game record, and the South Division’s triumph snapped a three-year losing skid.

Polk, a rising sophomore for the Vols, is starring this summer for the La Crosse (Wisc.) Loggers. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native and 2008 SEC All-Freshman honoree ranks third on the Loggers with 44 hits in 43 games played. He has driven in 16 runs, homered twice and stolen 10 bases while batting .244.
