Baseball Trainer Jeff Wood Heads to China with MLB International

Jeff Wood

Tennessee assistant athletic trainer Jeff Wood, whose primary duties include working with the Volunteers baseball team, has been selected to travel to China during the month of August for a three-week baseball clinic administered by Major League Baseball International.

Wood, who departs Friday, will work alongside a contingent of United States baseball coaches and instructors. The group will conduct an instructional clinic for approximately 50 Chinese children, ages 12-15.

“I’m thrilled and honored just to have this unique opportunity,” Wood said. “I’m very interested in Eastern medicinal and training techniques, and this is going to be a tremendous opportunity to learn and educate myself about practices used in other cultures.

“I grew up during a time when Americans simply didn’t go to China. It’s pretty incredible that during my time at the University of Tennessee I’ve had a chance to visit Cuba (with the baseball team in 2003) and now China. Not many people get that kind of opportunity.”

The MLB International clinic takes place in Wuxi, China, a city situated in the southern part of Jiangsu Province and in the middle of the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway. Wuxi (pronounced: woo-SHEE) sits approximately 128km northwest of Shanghai. Interestingly, Wuxi boasts an East Tennessee connection, as it is a “sister city” of Chattanooga.

Wood, 46, has been Tennessee’s baseball trainer since 2001. He arrived at UT boasting numerous years of professional experience as a baseball trainer, including a 10-year stint as a certified trainer in the Baltimore Orioles organization. In addition, he has worked with the Bluefield Orioles rookie-league team, the Charlotte O's class-AA club, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), NASCAR and PRCA professional rodeos.

In 1987, Wood was named Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs. He also has been invited to give numerous professional presentations on topics ranging from "Care and Prevention of the Potentially Cervical Spine Injured Athlete" to "Shoulder Injuries Associated with The Overhand Throwing."

The Winfield, W.Va., native earned a bachelor's degree in Education from Marshall (1984) and a master's in Exercise science from Tennessee (2002). He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification and the State of Tennessee and also holds membership in the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society.

Formed in 1989, Major League Baseball International is focused on the worldwide growth of baseball through game development, broadcasting, special events, sponsorship and licensing. Major League Baseball International currently has offices in New York, London, Sydney and Tokyo.
