The University of Tennessee baseball program announced the 26-man All-Century team Thursday during the "100 Years in the Park" celebration at the 17th annual Baseball Leadoff Banquet. The evening was also highlighted by the retirement of the No. 18 jersey in honor of former Vol standout and long-time major league manager Phil Garner.
"What a special night for Tennessee baseball," said head coach Todd Raleigh. "The men that make up this team characterize a great century of Tennessee baseball and to be part of such a milestone event is really an honor."
The 26-man All-Century team was chosen based on fan vote and statistics accumulated while at Tennessee.
Raleigh, along with Athletics Director Mike Hamilton, retired the No. 18 jersey in honor of Garner who played for the Diamond Vols from 1968-70 and went on to play and coach in the major leagues for almost two decades.
"Phil Garner has meant so much to the game of baseball both as a coach and player," said Hamilton. "I think it's great we're able to retire his number and pay tribute to such a legend."
Garner, along with the All-Century team will be honored on-field Friday during the Vols season-opener against two-time College World Series Champions Oregon State. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans through the door will receive a bronzed statue of Todd Helton.
