KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The complete schedule for the Houston College Classic was announced on Friday with Tennessee slated to play a trio of teams from the Lone Star State, including Houston and perennial powers Texas and Rice, at Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros, March 2-4.
The Volunteers will open the tournament with a 3:30 p.m. showdown against a program on the rise in Houston on Friday, March 2, before playing at the same time the following day when it will take on Texas. The last time the two teams met came at the same tournament in 2008 with the Vols taking home a 5-4 victory over the Longhorns. Tennessee will then close out its stay in Houston with a 6 p.m. contest on Sunday against Rice.
Tennessee's appearance will mark its third at the Houston College Classic, which is widely considered to be one of the most competitive early season events in college baseball. The Vols also participated in both 2005 and 2008.
Fellow Southeastern Conference team Arkansas and future conference-mate Texas A&M will also participate in this year's event, but Tennessee will not play them.
The Big Orange will open the 2012 campaign Feb. 17-19 when it hosts a three-game set against Northern Illinois at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
