Postgame Quotes: Vols 93, Texas A&M 85 (4OT)

Feb. 23, 2013

Tennessee Head Coach Cuonzo Martin

Opening statement

"That was a fun game to be a part of, I guess that is easier to say when you're coming from the winning side but I thought both teams fought hard both teams competed. Guys showed a lot of grit and toughness to compete in an atmosphere like this against a physical team. I thought we really accepted the challenge in all the overtimes, I think we held them to 30% in each the overtimes. So, that's a tremendous effort on the defensive side of the ball, just really locking down and making plays.  Being down on the road, I think in every half except the last one, we just found a way to make stops and make big plays. I thought our guards did a great job really attacking the rim and Jarnell (Stokes) was really good setting screens."

On what Trae (Golden) did to help the game

"The thing about Trae is that he can attack. Anytime you shoot the ball and attack the rim and you have a presence like Jarnell (Stokes) around all these other big guys it really helps, because he will get the ball on the other side. But, Trey makes free-throws so you can't be as aggressive defensively, as you would like because he can make free-throws. I just thought he was very aggressive, very assertive; he won't lose this game, he didn't want to give up."

Tennessee Forward Jarnell Stokes

On fatigue
"I'm tired but I am glad we won; that's all that matters. I wasn't worried about being fatigued. Trae (Golden) and Jordan (McRae) were going and we just wanted to get ball screens through them; it worked out for us."

Texas A&M Head Coach Billy Kennedy

Opening statement

"I am disappointed for our guys. We obviously had some opportunities to win, but we didn't get it done. We had some lay-ups early on that you have to make to beat a good Tennessee team. You got to give Tennessee credit, they made some plays and they drove the ball well late in the game and made a big 3-pointer to hurt us in the end."

On having four overtimes with four opportunities to win

"We have won some games like this, sometimes it just balances out. We had some good looks and we had some good opportunities, we just didn't get it done. To their credit, they made a couple big plays when they had to; the 3-point shot with nine seconds left to go, was a big shot. Usually teams try to attack the basket and score quick, but that kid made a tough and big shot."

On double/triple teaming Elston

"We really needed someone else to make a play. I thought J'Mychal (Reese) did some good things, but it really hurt us not having Alex (Caruso) because he makes plays for us, offensively, just his presence on the offensive end would have helped. Late, when so many guys fouled out, our post guys had a hard time with (Jarnell) Stokes; he is a very good player."

Texas A&M Guard Elston Turner

On being bothered by Tennessee's double-teaming

"No, not really. We did a good job of moving the ball. We were making it work on defense until the last 10 seconds. We threw some shots in the last couple seconds that we missed but that's just how the game goes. I have never been a part of a game like that. It was a fun game, but we definitely needed to make some extra plays to come out with a win."

On fourth overtime fatigue

"Yeah, I think that's was a problem for everybody a little bit, we had players foul out and players that sat on the bench and had to get warm in crucial moments; I think it was a problem for both teams."

Texas A&M Guard J'Mychal Reese

On being more assertive during the game

"I was just being more aggressive, if I had an open shot I would take it. I would try to get in the lane and make things happen."
