TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Buzz Peterson: "I would like to compliment Dale Clayton on his team's performance tonight. He does a great job with them, and they will get better as the year goes on. Year-in and year-out, they have a great program.
"I thought we were more focused defensively, tonight. We gave up 38 points in 35 minutes before we started subbing, and gave up some points there at the end. One thing we need to do a better job of is when they had 42 missed shots, and 20 second-chances; we have got to do a better job on the defensive boards. We played a lot of people tonight.
"Overall, for the first 35 minutes, I was pleased. Carson Newman is very athletic, and went to the boards well, so we have got to improve on that.
"JaJuan Smith has had some good practices, and it showed tonight. Dane Bradshaw's contributions are not going to show in the points column, but he had six assists, and no turnovers. If our guys continue to share the basketball like we did tonight, we have a chance to be successful.
"I think we are ready to go to Maui. We have a chance to play a team on the brink of the Top 25 (Stanford). If we win that game, we have a chance to play one of the best teams in the country (North Carolina). I told the team we have a great opportunity ahead of us. It will be nice to see the scenery and everything, but we are going out there to take care of business. We have got to go out there wanting to get some wins."
CARSON NEWMAN HEAD COACH DALE CLAYTON: "We have played three tough teams, Clemson, Radford, and now Tennessee. Being so young, we have to learn how to compete. We have to put the guys in tough situations where they learn mental toughness. We have to help them build good habits.
"I told our guys the measure of this game was not the score, it was the effort. They did a good job there. We had two post players who did not play, and one who got hurt, but it would not have made a difference in the score.
"Tennessee is much better; they shoot better, and that gives you a chance. They made the open looks they have not always made. They also made the looks when they were not open. They are deeper than they have been in the past. Andre Patterson, Chris Lofton and JaJuan Smith helped them a lot. Smith can shoot it.
"We are looking for a good year as we try to work in six freshmen. We lost five seniors last year, four of them being starters. I am seeing signs we will be where we want to be when the get to the end of January. We hope to peak around the first of February, and be a good team. We still have to play the defending Division II national champions.
"Tennessee is very aggressive on defense. Their big guys moved well, and they were aggressive on the boards. They play with a lot of energy, and are excited about playing. The coaches must be getting their point across."
