MAUI, Hawaii -- Despite a career-day from Jeronne Maymon (32 points and 20 rebounds), the Vols lost a heartbreaker to No. 8 Memphis, 99-97, in double overtime at the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational on Tuesday. Maymon had a chance to tie the game, but missed a jumper as time expired in the second overtime.

Antonio Barton's jumper with 1:14 left in the second OT gave the Tigers the decisive basket after the Vols' Dwight Miller had tied the game at 97-97 on a putback with 1:31 on the clock. Maymon continued to be the force he was all game with the first two buckets for the Vols in the second extra session to give UT a 95-93 lead with 3:01 left in the second OT.

Maymon became the first Vol to have at least 30 points and 20 rebounds in the same game since Steve Hamer vs. Alabama on March 7, 1996. Additionally, the last three players in a power conference to accomplish the feat were Oklahoma's Blake Griffin, Kansas State's Michael Beasley and Texas' Kevin Durant. All three were top-two NBA Draft picks.

The Vols (2-2) will play in the seventh-place game on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET (9:30 a.m. HT) against Chaminade (3-2). That game will air on ESPNU and the Vol Network. Trae Golden (14) scored in double-figures for the fourth time in four games and handed out seven assists.

Memphis (2-1) was led by the Barton brothers Will (25) and Antonio (21), who combined for 46 points. Adonis Thomas also added 19 for the Tigers. Will Barton grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Maymon's 20-rebound effort set a Maui Invitational record.

The game was Tennessee's first double-overtime game in more than a decade. The Vols last played a two-OT thriller on Jan. 27, 2001 at Georgia, falling, 77-75.

The teams will rematch on Jan. 4, 2012 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn.

In the first overtime, the teams went back-and-forth as the Vols took a 91-89 lead on a 3-pointer by Josh Richardson with 1:32 left on the clock. Chris Crawford answered after a Golden missed lay-up to deadlock the game at 91-91 on a lay-up with 27.9 seconds left in the first extra session

The Vols sent the game to overtime as Maymon put home a lay-up with 5.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 83-83. It marked the first time the game was tied since 24-24 with 11:18 left in the first half. Tennessee was down 83-78 after a Chris Crawford free throw with 1:46 left. Maymon converted a putback with 1:19 left and Kenny Hall made a pair of free throws with 1:00 left.

The Vols hung close the entire second half and got within one on a Cameron Tatum 3-pointer with 3:35 left in regulation to make it 77-76 after a pair of Golden free throws with 4:04 left in the second half. Will Barton bombed a 3-point field goal with 3:19 left to give Memphis an 80-76 lead.

Tennessee continued to battle midway through the second half, cutting the deficit to five on three occasions during the first 12 minutes of the half. Hall cut the Memphis lead to 69-64 on a hook shot with 10 minutes left in regulation. The Vols also cut the Tigers' lead to five, 59-54, on a McRae 3-pointer with 17:39 left in the second half, but Memphis answered with the next two buckets to regain a 10-point lead, 64-54.

With the game tied at 24 after a pair of Maymon free throws with 11:18 left in the first half, Memphis went on a 16-0 run to take a 40-24 lead. The Tigers' burst was led by the Barton brothers, who combined for nine of the 16 points as the run finished with a 3-pointer by Antonio Barton with 7:42 left in the first half.

The Vols continued to battle late in the first half and chipped away at Memphis' lead as Skylar McBee and Golden made 3-pointers to make it 46-36 Memphis with 3:22 left in the half. The Vols got within eight at 48-40 on a Maymon lay-up with 2:14 left in the half.

UT trailed 55-45 at halftime in a track meet as Golden (12) and Maymon (11) led the Vols statsheet at intermission. The Tigers' Will Barton (17) and Adonis Thomas (11) topped the Tigers.

The first half saw the teams combine for 100 points, and 28 fouls, taking nearly an hour to play.
