KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Down by 17 points at halftime, the Vols made a second-half charge to get within five, but lost to NC State, 65-58, on Wednesday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The SEC's second-leading scorer Jordan McRae scored in double-figures for the 10th time in as many games this season with 21. Senior Jeronne Maymon tallied 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the 11th double-double of his career.
Junior Jarnell Stokes had his sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. It marked the second time this season the Vols' bigmen had double-doubles in the same game (USC Upstate).
The Vols (6-4) suffered their first home loss of the season. Tennessee had a tough shooting night, making just 29.4 percent from the floor and only 3-of-24 3-pointers for 12.5 percent.
NC State (8-2) was led by T.J. Warren, the sixth-leading scorer in the nation (23.3 entering the game), who tallied 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. It was his third double-double of the year. Anthony Barber (12) and and Desmond Lee (10) also scored in double-figures.
Down by 17 at halftime, the Vols chipped away at the Wolfpack's lead throughout the second half. But the deficit proved to be too much for Tennessee.
McRae nailed the Vols' first two 3-pointer of the game to draw UT within eight at 42-34 with just under 15 minutes left in the second half.
A bank shot by Stokes coupled with a steal and fast-break layup by Darius Thompson brought the Vols to within five at 48-43 with 8:22 left.
NC State regained a double-figure lead with six consecutive points to hold a 56-45 edge with 2:30 left on the clock after a Lee jumper.
McRae canned a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to get UT within seven at 61-54. Robert Hubbs III made a short jumper for a final score.
The Wolfpack controlled the paint on both the offensive and defensive ends. NC State outscored UT, 36-26, inside and blocked a season-high 12 shots.
The Vols trailed 37-20 at halftime as NC State shot 50 percent from the floor while UT made just 24.1 percent (7-of-29). UT failed to make a first-half 3-pointer for the first time since Feb. 10, 2013.
NC State scored the contest's first six points and took the game's first double-figure lead on a pair of free throws by Lennard Freeman with 10:39 left in the half to lead 21-11.
The Wolfpack used a 16-4 run to double up the Vols at 30-15 with 4:15 left in the first half as Warren has seven points in the spurt.
NC State took its largest lead of the half, 16 (35-19) on a jumper by Kyle Washington with 1:35 left in the half.
The Vols and Wolfpack played for the first time since a 1994 overtime contest won by NC State, 72-70. Overall, NC State leads the series, 6-3.
The Vols continue their four-game homestand on Monday, Dec. 23 Morehead State comes to Knoxville for a 7 p.m. tip-off. That game airs on ESPNU and can be heard on the Vol Network. Tennessee hosts Virginia (Dec. 30) and Tusculum (Jan. 4) before opening SEC play on Jan. 7 at LSU.
