Jan. 16, 2013

Former Tennessee basketball player Bill Lovelace (1953-55) passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, at his home in Dandridge, Tenn., following a brief illness.

After graduating from Knoxville's Central High School, Lovelace enrolled at UT and lettered for three seasons on the men's basketball team. In 65 career games played under head coach Emmett Lowery, Lovelace averaged 6.7 points and 3.3 rebounds as a guard.

His step-grandson, Tyler Summitt, suited up for the Volunteers basketball program from 2011-12.

Lovelace earned his degree from Tennessee, served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 15 years and was the founder and owner of Top Flite Oil Inc., a company that distributed petroleum products and operated convenience stores in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 17, from 5-7 p.m. prior to funeral service at First Baptist Church in Dandridge at 7 p.m. Interment graveside service takes place Friday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at the French Broad Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund (P.O. Box 246, Dandridge, TN, 37725) or the French Broad Baptist Cemetery Fund.
