University of Tennessee Senior Associate Athletic Trainer Chad Newman was named "Athletic Trainer of the Year" by the Tennessee Athletic Trainer's Society (TATS) Sunday during the organization's annual meeting at Opryland in Nashville. Newman is in his 15th year with the UT training staff and his 14th with the men's basketball program.

"Chad has been an integral member of the Tennessee Sports Medicine department for many years," UT Director of Sports Medicine Jason McVeigh said. "His dedication to the profession of athletic training ,and his countless hours of service to UT are the reason so many former and current Vol student-athletes hold him in the highest regard.

"To be recognized by his peers as the Tennessee Athletic Trainer of the Year is truly an honor, and one that he has earned. I can think of no other athletic trainer who epitomizes the character and professionalism of athletic training more than Chad Newman."

Last September, Newman was instrumental in reviving Tennessee sophomore basketball player Emmanuel Negedu after Negedu collapsed following a sudden cardiac arrest. Newman, along with McVeigh, successfully administered the use of an AED and CPR until emergency medical services arrived on-site.

Also last fall, Newman authored an article about former Vol Chris Lofton's successful return from cancer entitled "The Toughest Opponent," that was published in Training & Conditioning Magazine.

During Newman's tenure with the basketball team, the Vols have advanced to postseason play 10 times--including eight NCAA Tournaments and a pair of NIT berths. Newman has been a part of three NCAA Sweet Sixteen teams and two SEC Championship squads.

"I was thrilled when I was told Chad won this award," Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl said. "He is a vital part of our program and has been instrumental in the success of our student-athletes individually and our team as a whole. He doesn't receive nearly enough credit for all the great things he does for UT.

"We are so fortunate to have him as a colleague and friend."

In addition to his basketball duties, Newman also works with Tennessee's cheerleading, dance and men's golf teams.

A native of Chattanooga, Newman is married to the former Stacey Perry. The couple has two daughters, Katherine (6) and Natalie (2).
