UT Seeks 8th Straight Win in Knoxville Over UGA

  • 2008-09 marks Tennessee's 100th season of varsity basketball. A season-long centennial celebration includes the selection of a Tennessee Basketball All-Century Team. Ballots are available in the Thompson-Boling Arena concourse for all home games.
  • Thompson-Boling Arena has hosted four of the 20-largest crowds in all of college basketball this season and is drawing an average of 20,783 fans per game to rank third in the country.
  • In its last outing, Tennessee fell at Auburn 78-77 on Saturday. A Korvotney Barber layup with six seconds left secured the win for the Tigers as the Vols dropped their first SEC road game of the season.
  • After winning the battle of the boards in 12 of their first 16 contests, the Vols have been outrebounded in each of the last six games. UT's rebounding average has dipped from 42.0 to 39.1 since Jan. 19.
  • While rebounding is down for the Vols, the team's shooting percentage is soaring. Tennessee is shooting 51.8 percent over the last three games. Eight Vols are shooting .500 or better during that span.
  • The UT bench has outscored the opposition's bench 560-301 this season. The Vols' bench has scored more than the opponents' in 20 games, and has done so by at least 17 points in 10 different games.

Still rounding into shape after a high-ankle sprain in October, freshman Trey Thompkins has nonetheless managed to emerge as the Bulldogs' leading offensive threat and their top rebounder (13.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg) ... Were he to maintain his team-high pace, Thompkins would be the first UGA freshman to lead the Bulldogs in those two categories since Jumaine Jones in 1998 ... Thompkins also leads the Bulldogs in blocked shots (21) ... After UGA dismissed head coach Dennis Felton last Thursday, assistant Pete Herrmann was named interim coach ... Tennessee improved to 4-0 in SEC openers under head coach Bruce Pearl by overcoming a 10-point second-half deficit Jan. 10 to defeat Georgia 86-77 in Athens, Ga. ... For the first time all season, the UT bench was outscored by the opponents' bench (29-11), but all five Volunteers starters scored in double figures ... Tyler Smith led the way with a UT-career-high-tying 24 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and six assists ... Point guard Bobby Maze added a season-high 16 points ... Tennessee led 36-32 at the half, but a second-quarter run by the Bulldogs gave UGA a 54-44 lead with 12:26 to play ... Maze scored 11 points in the second half to help the Vols regain the lead at 4:22 remaining ... After Georgia took a one-point lead with just over three minutes on the clock, UT reeled off 13 straight points to put the game away ... Terrance Woodbury and Trey Thompkins led the Bulldogs with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Volunteers Look to Continue Streak of Success vs. UGA Under Pearl

During the Bruce Pearl era, Tennessee has enjoyed more success against Georgia than against any other team (7-0) ... Under Pearl, the Vols average 81.4 ppg vs. the Bulldogs while allowing only 72.4 ppg ... UT's average margin of victory against Georgia in the Pearl era is 9.0 ppg, and that was the winning maring last month in Athens (86-77) ... "Wheezy" Nearing Statistical Milestones

With 954 career points and 575 career rebounds, junior Wayne Chism is close to becoming the 16th player in school history to log 1,000 points and 600 boards ... He is on track to become the 41st member of UT's 1,000-point club ... Chism also is on pace to attempt a season-high 136 free throws during the regular-season ... His current season-high for free-throw attempts is 104 during his freshman campaign ... He's already attempted 100 through just 22 games this year.

Defensive Turnaround

The Vols' defense has improved in recent weeks ... After allowing an average of 76.3 ppg through Jan. 17, UT has allowed an average of 68.2 ppg in its last six contests ... On Jan. 24, UT held Memphis to its lowest scoring output of the season (54) ... Jan. 31 against Florida, UT held the Gators to their second-lowest scoring output of the season (63) and their fourth-lowest shooting percentage of the season (.423).
