VOLS EARN NO. 5 SEED, PLAY LONG BEACH STATE IN COLUMBUS The Tennessee Volunteers (22-10, 10-6 Southeastern Conference) were selected as a No. 5 seed in the NCAA South Region where they face the Long Beach State 49ers of the Big West Conference in Columbus, Ohio, in the first round beginning March 16. This is UT's 15th NCAA appearance overall, second straight and sixth in the last 10 years. The Vols own an 9-15 tournament record. The Vols and 49ers are scheduled to tip-off at 2:45 p.m. ET which is 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Virginia-Albany game that begins at 12:15 p.m. ET on CBS. This is the first meeting between Tennessee and Long Beach State. UT has only played two teams from the Big West Conference in UC Irvine (W, 89-53 in 1972) and Cal State Northridge (W, 83-64 in 1998). Also in UT's bracket is a possible second round matchup against the winner of the No. 4 seed Virginia and No. 13 Albany. The Vols, who are 3-7 all-time against Virginia, last played Cavaliers in the Jimmy V Classic in 2000, dropping a 107-89 decision. Tennessee has never faced Albany, but is 3-0 all-time against America East Conference foes, going 2-0 against Vermont and 1-0 versus Boston University. The Vols played nine teams in the field, going 6-6. They went 1-1 vs. Florida, Vanderbilt and Kentucky, 1-0 against Arkansas, Memphis, Texas, 0-1 vs. Ohio State, North Carolina, Butler. UT played six regular-season conference champions, going 3-4. They were Florida (SEC), North Carolina (ACC), Memphis (Conference USA), ETSU (Atlantic Sun) and Ohio State (Big 10). The Vols also faced four league tournament champions in Florida, North Carolina, Memphis and Ohio State. Head coach Bruce Pearl is making his 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in 15 seasons and second straight with Tennessee. He owns a 3-3 record in the Division I Tournament, including a Sweet 16 apperance with Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005.
